Breed: Akita Other Breeds
The Akita is large, powerful, alert, with much substance and heavy bone. He has a deep muzzle, small eyes and erect ears, and a large curled tail. Renown for his fierce love, loyalty and obedience to his owner. He is the largest of the Japanese Spitz-type breeds. Akitas have webbed feet and are very strong swimmers. Akitas need space and should not be confined.
Height: 24 - 28"
Weight: 75 - 110 lbs.
Temperament: Active, independent, dignified, bold.
Color(s): Any colors including white, brindle and pinto, with or without a mask.
Grooming: Requires daily brushing. Daily exercise is essential. Sheds twice a year. Bath only when necessary.
Coat(s): Outer coat coarse, straight and stand-off. Soft, dense undercoat.
With Children: Yes, will protect family children, apprehensive of other children.
With Pets: Yes with family pets, may be aggressive towards other small animals.
Training: Early obedience is necessary to prevent aggression against other dogs. Intelligence is extremely high.
Exercise: Moderate
Health Issues: Hip dysplasia and eye problems.
Housing: A house with a fenced yard is essential.
Life Span: 12 Years
