As
the name suggests, the American Indian Dog was bred for thousands
of years by the Plains Indians. Started from dogs brought by
Old World explorers to the Americas such as Vikings, and bred
to coyotes of the plains, these utility dogs served the nomads
of the west well. Used for packing, herding, and hunting these
guardians of the campsites also served as faithful companions
as well as supplying wool for weaving. While distant cousins
to the coyote, these dogs should not be confused with coyote
or wolf hybrids of today. After nearing extinction in the late
1800's, the American Indian Dog is making a comeback after careful
breeding programs in place today. "Spirit
Dogs", as they are sometime called, are extremely loyal
and intelligent. Their even temperament makes them great with
children and other dogs. These dogs excel in search and rescue,
herding, agility and obedience making them perfect athletes
and working dogs as well. They are said to be hypoallergenic
and makes good dogs for those with asthma or allergies. Keeping
the same mystical look they have had for thousands of years,
these dogs are as beautiful to look as well as being a versatile
breed to own. |
