Breed: Borzoi (Russian Wolfhound) Other Breeds

The Borzoi arrived in Russia during the 1600s from Arabia and quickly took a place at Queen Victoria's side as well as British royalty. First crossed with longer haired sheep dogs and used for hunting wolves, the Borzoi earned its name, the Russian wolfhound. For years, Russian nobility bred with the Borzoi and the breed became a favorite gift among royalty. The Borzoi's name comes from the Russian word, "borzii," which means swift.

Height:

26 - 31 inches

Weight:

60 - 105 pounds

Temperament: The Borzoi is a hunter with very little territorial instinct and therefore should not be trusted outside off leash. It will chase, and possibly kill small animals outside. Otherwise, the breed is very docile and quiet...rarely barking. It can be catlike in that it prefers to keep itself clean. Borzois are loyal, intelligent dogs and are quite affectionate with people they know.
Color(s):

White, golden, tan or gray with black markings

Grooming:

The Dalmatian sheds profusely and should be brushed regularly to keep it under control. Bathing is required only when necessary, as Dalmatians tend to be very clean and will even avoid walking through puddles.

Coat(s): Long, silky coat that may be wavy or curly. The neck has a heavy mane.
With Children:

The Borzoi gets along fairly well with children but does not tolerate rough play. Recommended only for quiet, older children as a companion dog. The Borzoi likes its rest.

With Pets:

Gets along well with other dogs and should be socialized and watched carefully with cats and other small pets. Being a hunter, the Borzoi will chase fleeing animals.

Training:

This highly intelligent dog whose training should be based on mutual respect. Free-thinking and less willing to please humans than some other breeds. Can be trained for obedience.

Exercise:

The Borzoi needs regular vigorous exercise to maintain its sleek, muscular shape. Makes an excellent jogging companion and likes to run along side a bicycle. However, beware of the extremely high prey drive that will cause the Borzoi to take off quickly after small animals.

Health Issues:

Sensitive to drugs, prone to bloat. Recommended feeding in small amounts, two to three times per day. No exercise immediately following meals.

Housing:

Does fine in an apartment as long as there's an opportunity for regular exercise. Does best with an average sized yard. Should never be kept off leash except in fenced in areas with supervision nearby.

Life Span: 10 - 12 years
Country of Origin: Russia
Conformation Group: Hound
