Breed: Cane Corso Other Breeds

Strong, muscular, elegant breed; medium to large in size. The cane corso was bred in Italy as a working dog and used for protecting large animals like cattle. Direct ancestor of the old Roman Molossian, used for hunting large wild animals. This dog will not pick a fight with another dog but it will not back down either. Very protective but gentle. Excellent guard dog; highly intelligent and trainable. The name Corso derives from the Latin cohors, which means protector. Breed is impervious to pain so the invisible fence is ineffective as a means of containment.

Height:

23 - 27 inches

Weight:

88 - 110 pounds

Temperament: Even temperament. Willing to please, quiet around the house, very protective of house, family and property. Can be aggressive with strangers and other dogs if not socialized as a puppy. Docile and affectionate with its owner.
Color(s):

Black, plumb-gray, slate, light gray, blue/gray, light fawn, deer fawn, dark fawn and tabby

Grooming:

Very light shedder. Needs occasional combing to remove dead hair. Bathing when necessary but otherwise, very little grooming is needed.

Coat(s): Short, dense, slightly textured. Shiny, stiff hair with a light layer that grows thicker in winter.
With Children:

Excellent with children in the family, makes a good guard dog. Should be submissive to all family members.

With Pets:

Can be aggressive with other dogs without proper training and socialization at an early age.

Training:

Highly intelligent, very trainable. Recommended that the breed become fully obedience-trained.

Exercise:

Very athletic, needs lots of exercise. Makes a great jogging companion.

Health Issues:

Typical bone and joint problems as with other larger breeds.

Housing:

Apartment living is adequate as long as there is adequate exercise. Content to live outdoors with adequate shelter.

Life Span: 10 - 11 years
Country of Origin: Italy
