Breed: Coton de Tulear Other Breeds

Coton de Tulear, (pronounced coe-tawn day tul-ee-r) originated in the city of Tulear, Madagascar, now known as the “Royal Dog of Madagascar” and being honored with their own postage stamp. The Coton was originally bred as a companion dog for Kings and noblemen only. Anyone found in possession of a Coton who was not of noble heritage were punished severely.

Cotons are wonderful little dogs that have perfected the art of being a companion dog. Those who meet the Coton are quick to see their wonderful puppy-like and adorable qualities. Although still fairly rare, they have seen an increase in popularity since the 1970's. (Photo: Haardlee Hop Ottin')
