The
Chinese Crested is a fine-boned, elegant and graceful dog
who makes a loving companion, playful and entertaining. He
adores food and will leap about in anticipation of a tiny
bite. There are two types, the Hairless with hair only on
the head, tail and feet and the Powderpuff who is completely
covered with hair. A friendly family dog, not aggressive towards
children or other animals. They do not make good kennel dogs,
but love the companionship of a home. They do best as a one
dog family and sometimes do not like to be over handled by
strangers. Odorless and hairless they are a very low maintenance
breed.

Special care is needed to protect the skin including sunscreen

prevent decay. Chew bones are not a good idea as they do not
normally have a full set of teeth and can lose more if care
is not given. Also need to be careful of over feeding, as the
breed can become obese. |

As they are fairly active indoors apartment living is good.
They can also do okay without a yard. |

of Origin: |
The
Chinese Crested originated in Africa where they were called
"African Hairless Terriers." The ancient Aztecs kept
them as bedwarmers, and believe it or not, did eat them. The
Chinese trading ships stopped along Africa on their routes,
and it was there that they picked up these dogs because they
were excellent ratters for aboard their ships. They renamed
the dogs "Chinese Crested" and the name stuck. The
stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee, used to breed the Chinese Crested. |
