Breed: Chinese Crested Other Breeds

The Chinese Crested is a fine-boned, elegant and graceful dog who makes a loving companion, playful and entertaining. He adores food and will leap about in anticipation of a tiny bite. There are two types, the Hairless with hair only on the head, tail and feet and the Powderpuff who is completely covered with hair. A friendly family dog, not aggressive towards children or other animals. They do not make good kennel dogs, but love the companionship of a home. They do best as a one dog family and sometimes do not like to be over handled by strangers. Odorless and hairless they are a very low maintenance breed.

Height: 11" - 13"
Weight: Not over 10 pounds
Temperament: These dogs are gay, alert, sweet, lively, playful and cuddly. They are exceptionally affectionate and love to hug and give smiles. They are entertaining companions and very intelligent. They tend to become very attached to their owners and transitions to new owners can be difficult.
Color(s): Any color or combination of colors
Grooming: Very minimal. Should be bathe at least once a week with moisturizing lotion applied to keep the skin supple. Should be wiped down daily to avoid pimples and black heads
Coat(s): The hairless have fine tufts of hair along the top of the head to the base of the neck (crest). Also along the tail (plume). And on the feet (socks).
With Children: Yes - Great with children. But the children must be taught to be gentle with the dog.
With Pets: Yes - loving and playful.
Training: Because of their intelligence training is relatively easy. The puppies should be well socialized to avoid timidity in adult life.
Exercise: These dogs do well with just regular sessions of play. Although they do enjoy brisk walks.
Health Issues: Special care is needed to protect the skin including sunscreen if exposed to the sun. Their teeth must be well cared for to prevent decay. Chew bones are not a good idea as they do not normally have a full set of teeth and can lose more if care is not given. Also need to be careful of over feeding, as the breed can become obese.
Housing: As they are fairly active indoors apartment living is good. They can also do okay without a yard.
Life Span: 10 - 16 years
Country of Origin: The Chinese Crested originated in Africa where they were called "African Hairless Terriers." The ancient Aztecs kept them as bedwarmers, and believe it or not, did eat them. The Chinese trading ships stopped along Africa on their routes, and it was there that they picked up these dogs because they were excellent ratters for aboard their ships. They renamed the dogs "Chinese Crested" and the name stuck. The stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee, used to breed the Chinese Crested.
Conformation Group: Toy
