Breed: Fox Terrier Other Breeds

Pint-sized The popular Fox Terrier is lively and fun-loving. Both the smooth and wirehaired was developed in England in the 18th century for "bolting" or driving out foxes from their dens. These fearless hunters would dig, crawl and squirm their way into a fox hole and attack unrelentingly until the fox bolted. Never refusing to play, they do everything with full force. Fox Terriers are eager to please and clean in their household habits. They make delightful companions for active people.

Height: 14 - 15 1/2 inches
Weight: 15 - 19 lbs.
Temperament: Alert, determined, eager, trustworthy, affectionate.
Color(s): with brown, black or tan markings.
Grooming: Wirehaired should be brushed or combed twice a week and clipped or stripped (removing the old hair by hand) to preserve the texture and luster of the coat every three months. The smooth only needs a short brushing once a week.
Coat(s): Smooth: short and flat-lying; Wirehaired: moderately long with dense, wiry texture.
With Children: Respectful to children over five years old.
With Pets: Small pets such as cats may be fair game and they may try to dominate other dogs.
Training: Obedience training and socialization must begin early. Firm, persistent handling is required.
Exercise: Fox terriers are extremely energetic and need daily exercise - long vigorous walks and/or ball playing - as well as human interaction.
Health Issues: Deafness, Legg-Perthes disease, mast cell tumors, skin allergies and genetic eye diseases.
Housing: Apartment is adequate if given sufficient exercise but ideal is a home with a fenced backyard as they are active terrier. Do not leave alone in the yard as they may bark and try to dig their way out.
Life Span: 12 - 14 years
Country of Origin: England
Conformation Group: Terrier
