Breed: Golden Retriever Other Breeds

If ever a breed moved from work in the field to beloved family dog, it is the Golden Retriever. Originally bred in Britain in the early 1800's, the Retriever gained popularity, as did the sport of bird hunting for which it was bred. Later, Lord Tweedmouth was credited with refining the breed in Scotland in the late 1800's. Today, Goldens can trace their ancestry back to the breeding of Lord Tweedmouth. They arrived at in the United States at the turn of the century, and were recognized by the AKC in 1925.

Friendly, trustworthy, forgiving and reliable all describe the nature of the Retriever. They are quick to make friends with strangers, and are supremely devoted to their masters. Goldens thrive on constant attention, and are eager to shower their family with constant love and devotion. They also excel in field trials and hunting, and love swimming and water sports. Golden Retrievers are also found in service work such as therapy, guide dogs for the blind, and search and rescue work. Their keen ability to adapt to changes in circumstances and surroundings make them ideal for work.

Today, the Golden Retriever is one of the most popular family dogs thanks to their even temperament and love of human companionship. Their versatility makes them a perfect choice of breed for most anyone.
