Breed: German Shepherd Dog Other Breeds

The German Shepherd Dog is an alert, protective dog who makes a wonderful companion. If properly nurtured around children and other pets, he can make a great family pet. The GSD is extremely trainable and works well as a police dog or for search and rescue work.

Height: Male 24"-26"; Female 22"-24"
Weight: Male 75-90lbs; Female 60-70lbs
Temperament: Highly intelligent. Territorial. Initially suspicious of strangers, the GSD can be a great watchdog.
Color(s): Black, gray and tan.
Grooming: Coat requires regular brushing.
Coat(s): GSDs have an undercoat, as well as a straight outer coat.
With Children: Loves his own children, but may be suspicious of other children.
With Pets: Fine if trained from a puppy to accept other pets.
Training: Obedience training will help improve his social skills.
Exercise: Long, daily walks. Needs a large open yard. Requires considerable exercise both indoors and out.
Health Issues: Hip dysplasia, skin disease, bloat, congenital heart disease, nervous condition and panosteitis.
Housing: Country or city living as long as adequate attention and exercise is given. Fenced yard is essential.
Life Span: 12 - 13 years
