Breed: Karst Shepherd (Karst Sheepdog) Other Breeds

The Karst Shepherd is the oldest indigenous breed of Slovenia. It has been used as a sheepdog for centuries in the area of the state known as the Karst region, where huge limestone caves have formed underneath the high plateaus of the Eastern Alps in Slovenia. It is believed that the Karst Shepherd was brought to the area by the Illyrians via the Dalmatian Islands in the Adriatic Sea. Though today the Karst Shepherd is used mostly as a companion animal and family friend, it is highly regarded as a good guard dog for flocks.

Height:

21 - 25 inches

Weight:

58 - 99 pounds

Temperament: The Karst is an independent and brave, yet prudent and very reliable breed. It prefers to be an equal partner rather than a subordinate. It is a poor retriever but a good guard dog and is very protective. The Karst Shepherd is reserved and cautious with strangers.

Iron grey with shades of silver, tan cream and black.

Needs regular brushing.
