Breed: Maltese Other Breeds

The Maltese is thought to have arrived in England with the crusaders, who were returning home from the Mediterranean. It was originally developed in Italy with the addition of miniature spaniel and poodle blood. The breed became particularly popular with English women, who would carry them in their sleeves or bags. Publius, the Roman governor or Malta prized his Maltese, Issa, and had her portrait commissioned. Today the Maltese is a popular companion dog and a favorite for showing.

Height:

8 - 10 inches

Weight:

6.5 - 9 pounds

Temperament: The Maltese is spirited, lively and playful. Gentle, loving, trusting and devoted to its master. Highly intelligent. The breed is typically bold and quick to sound the alarm in case of suspicious noises. If it is too pampered, the Maltese becomes jealous when strangers enter the home and will bark or nip at ankles.
Color(s):

Solid white or ivory

Grooming:

Daily combing and brushing of the long coat is important but be gentle, as the coat is very soft. Clean the eyes and beard daily to prevent staining. Bathe or dry shampoo regularly - making sure the animal is thoroughly dry and warm afterward. Clean the ears regularly check and clean the eyes if necessary. The hair on the top of the head is often tied up in a topknot to keep it away from the eyes. Some pet owners opt to clip the hair short for easier and less time consuming grooming.

Coat(s): single, silky coat, parted down the middle, with no undercoat, standard should not be wavy, curly or kinky. The shiny coat is made of thick, heavy hair which is about 8½ inches long for showing. The Maltese sheds little to no hair and is good for allergy sufferers.
With Children:

May be snappy with inconsiderate children

With Pets:

Very lovable and good with other animals

Training:

Highly intelligent and good at learning tricks if sufficiently rewarded. Can be difficult to housebreak. Paper training might be a good idea to keep the Maltese out of extreme weather. (see health issues below).

Exercise:

Although the Maltese is very playful, play will not satisfy the need for a daily walk. A good, open play area or yard is preferred. Will display behavioral problems if not sufficiently exercised or walked.

Health Issues:

Prone to sunburn along the hair parting; skin, respiratory, eye and tooth problems. Some Maltese may be difficult to feed with weak, upset digestion. They may get the chills, and they experience discomfort in hot weather. Maltese should be kept out of damp areas.

Housing:

The Maltese is a good dog for apartment life. Very active indoors.

Life Span: 15 - 18 years
Country of Origin: Italy
Conformation Group: Toy
