The Maltese is thought to have arrived in England with the crusaders, who were returning home from the Mediterranean. It was originally developed in Italy with the addition of miniature spaniel and poodle blood. The breed became particularly popular with English women, who would carry them in their sleeves or bags. Publius, the Roman governor or Malta prized his Maltese, Issa, and had her portrait commissioned. Today the Maltese is a popular companion dog and a favorite for showing.
