Breed: Papillon Other Breeds

Pint-sized Papillons are excellent choices for dog-lovers who like lapdogs; but want playful pooches as well. Papillons date back almost 700 years and were common in the royal courts of Europe. European artists as far back as the 15th century included Papillons in their paintings of kings and princes. even today, Papillons can easily brighten the darkest day with their royal attitude and feistiness. The name French name "Papillon" was given to the breed because its distinctive head markings resemble butterflies.

Height: 8 - 11 in. from the floor
Weight: 8 - 10 lbs.
Temperament: The dog was definitely not told that it was tiny, and if it was it doesn't care. Papillons are tougher than they look. Though loving and playful, Papillons are not suitable for young children because some can be high-strung and nervous. Another reasons to steer clear of youngsters? Papillons are great jumpers, likely to dart from a child's arms and hurt themselves.
Color(s): All Papillons are white but have spotted patches of any color.
Grooming: Coat will need weekly brushing. The pads on his feet will need trimming. Bathing is minimal.
Coat(s): The Papillon has a long, silky topcoat with no undercoat. The hair is straight on the chest, ears and back of the forelegs. The hair on the hind legs above the hocks is fringed.
With Children: Good, although a puppy may be too much for a small child.
With Pets: Yes
Training: Although housetraining can be particularly hard for this dog, Papillons can be taught small tricks.
Exercise: Papillons are lively and can turn going out to potty into a play session. Even though these dogs won't be too disturbed if they're stuck in the house for a few days, they prefer time to romp outside.
Health Issues: This dog's major potential health problems include patellar luxation (loose kneecaps), and some eye problems, and a larger than normal risk of fontanel--a "soft spot" on the skull.
Housing: Protective and possessive, Papillions are likely to bark at the unfamiliar. Avoid apartment dwelling with these dwarf dogs because they're likely to get flustered and bark at the general noise and bustle of apartment living.
Life Span: 14 - 16 years
Country of Origin: France
Conformation Group: Toy
