Breed: Poodle (Standard) Other Breeds

The standard poodle is the original. Miniature and toy poodles were bred down in size from the standard. A highly intelligent breed which will train you if you are not careful. Often this athletic breed is mistakenly portrayed as a poofy dog; however, they have great endurance. Their strong, agile build enables them to adapt well to any activity or sport you wish to enroll in. Appropriately named the ‘Pudel’ in Germany, meaning to splash in water, the Standard poodle was the first water retriever. Standard poodles excel in obedience, flyball, Frisbee, agility, Seeing Eye dogs, field and hunting trials, service dogs and great family pet.

Height: Anything over 15" is considered a standard. Average height is 24-27".
Weight: 40lbs and up.
Temperament: Outgoing and friendly with wonderful sense of humor. Fiercely loyal to their family making them wonderful watch dogs.
Color(s): White, black, gray, silver, blue, cream, apricot, red, brown, café au lait, silver-beige, and variations of each.
Grooming: Maintenance can be very time consuming if the coat is left long. Grooming can be kept to a bare minimum by keeping the coat short.
Coat(s): Puppies have loose soft curls. Adults have curly harsh texture. Sheds very little. Hair that is shed remains in the coat until you brush it out.
With Children: Yes
With Pets: Yes
Training: Highly intelligent, easily trainable.
Exercise: Medium exercise requirement.
Health Issues: All breeding stock should be screened for Hip Dysplasia (HD), Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Von Willebrand’s (vWd), Thyroid, Addison’s, Juvenile Renal Disease.
Housing: Standard poodles are very adaptable; they are comfortable in an apartment, single family home or farmhouse.
Life Span: Average 12 - 13 years
Country of Origin: France, Germany and Russia all have a hand in the origin of the poodle. Although the poodle is the national dog of France and it was the French that perfected the fashionable poodle clips.
Conformation Group: Non-sporting
