Breed: Karst Shepherd (Karst Sheepdog) Other Breeds

The Vizsla is a Hungarian hunting dog that descended from the Transylvanian hound and the now extinct Turkish yellow dog. More recently, it's believed that pointers were introduced. After World War II the breed almost became extinct but Hungarians saved some individual dogs and reestablished the breed's numbers. Owning a Vizsla was a symbol of aristocracy and when Russia took over Hungary after the war, Hungarians believed the Vizsla would be destroyed so they smuggled some of them into neighboring countries and to the United States. Today the Vizsla is known widely as an excellent hunting dog and has a mild temperament, making it a great family pet.

Height:

20 - 26 inches

Weight:

40 - 60 pounds

Temperament: The Vizsla can be willful and easily distracted but it is smart and easily trainable with a firm, steady hand. Obedience training is a must because the Vizsla can be a little high strung. Without proper training, the dog will be overly eager and excitable. It's mild, gentle temperament makes the Vizsla an excellent dog for families with children. However, it might be a little too playful and energetic around small toddlers.
Color(s):

Golden rust colored with eyes that blend in with the coat color.

Grooming:

Brushing with a firm bristled brush and occasional dry bathing are all that are needed. Bathe the Vizsla with mild soap only when necessary.

Coat(s): The Vizsla's coat is smooth, short, abundant and tight to the entire body.
With Children:

Very loving, gentle dog; excellent with children. The Vizsla likes as much playtime as it can get and may be too energetic with very small children or toddlers.

With Pets:

Good with other dogs and cats with which it is raised. However, since the Vizsla is a hunter, it is not recommended for homes where there are other small pets, such as rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs.

Training:

Easily trainable and excellent for obedience competitions.

Exercise:

The Vizsla is a highly energetic breed that requires daily walks or jogs of at least a mile. Without proper exercise the Vizsla will get bored and become destructive or display behavioral problems.

Health Issues:

Prone to hip dysplasia.

Housing:

Not suited for apartment living. This breed needs lots of space and can live outdoors if necessary because of its thick, protective coat, as long as sufficient shelter is available.

Life Span: 12 - 15 years
Country of Origin: Hungary
Conformation Group: Sporting
