The Vizsla is a Hungarian hunting dog that descended from the Transylvanian hound and the now extinct Turkish yellow dog. More recently, it's believed that pointers were introduced. After World War II the breed almost became extinct but Hungarians saved some individual dogs and reestablished the breed's numbers. Owning a Vizsla was a symbol of aristocracy and when Russia took over Hungary after the war, Hungarians believed the Vizsla would be destroyed so they smuggled some of them into neighboring countries and to the United States. Today the Vizsla is known widely as an excellent hunting dog and has a mild temperament, making it a great family pet.

The Vizsla can be willful and easily distracted but it is smart and easily trainable with a firm, steady hand. Obedience training is a must because the Vizsla can be a little high strung. Without proper training, the dog will be overly eager and excitable. It's mild, gentle temperament makes the Vizsla an excellent dog for families with children. However, it might be a little too playful and energetic around small toddlers. |
