Breed: Wetterhoun Other Breeds

The Wetterhoun was developed in the Dutch province of Friesland about 400 years ago. The term Wetterhoun is Dutch for water dog and the breed was most likely descended from the now extinct Old Water Dog, which contributed to many modern spaniels. Breeders developed the Wetterhoun specifically for hunting and killing otters in the Netherlands. After some time, the otter population became more manageable and was not a threat to the northern fishing industry so Wetterhouns were used for hunting small land animals such as polecats, which threatened farms. This rare breed is seldom seen outside of its native home of the Netherlands and is a natural swimmer.

Height:

21 – 23 inches

Weight:

33 – 44 pounds

Temperament: Intelligent, strong willed, independent, great guard dog. The Wetterhoun is not a dog for beginning dog owners. It is physically demanding on itself and is very rugged. With its own people, the Wetterhoun is good natured, friendly and very watchful. With strangers, it is cautious and on alert at all times. However, when friends become familiar to the Wetterhoun pet, they are greeted warmly. It makes a brave, reliable watchdog.
Color(s):

Liver and white, black and white, solid black or solid liver.

Grooming:

Occasional brushing and combing are all that are necessary for this easy-to-care-for breed.

Coat(s): Coarse, thick, curly, hair over the entire body except the legs, which have shorter hair. The oily coat should not be woolly.
With Children:

Good with children in its own family as far as they treat it properly.

With Pets:

Accepting of other dogs and pets with no problem.

Training:

The Wetterhoun is highly intelligent and very independent. Kind, consistent training is essential. Because it is so independent, the Wetterhoun may ignore its commands so some corrective action might be necessary.

Exercise:

Loves to swim and needs a lot of exercise. A large yard is ideal and daily, long brisk walks are necessary.

Health Issues:

No known health issues

Housing:

The Wetterhoun was bred and raised in the countryside and is rarely seen outside of such a setting. It is not suited for apartment life in an urban area because it will become distressed. Does well in cold climates with adequate shelter and can live outdoors in a kennel with adequate exercise.

Life Span: 12 – 13 years
Country of Origin: Netherlands
Conformation Group: Sporting
