The Wetterhoun was developed in the Dutch province of Friesland about 400 years ago. The term Wetterhoun is Dutch for water dog and the breed was most likely descended from the now extinct Old Water Dog, which contributed to many modern spaniels. Breeders developed the Wetterhoun specifically for hunting and killing otters in the Netherlands. After some time, the otter population became more manageable and was not a threat to the northern fishing industry so Wetterhouns were used for hunting small land animals such as polecats, which threatened farms. This rare breed is seldom seen outside of its native home of the Netherlands and is a natural swimmer. |

Intelligent, strong

is cautious and on alert at all times. However, when friends
become familiar to the Wetterhoun pet, they are greeted warmly.
