As anyone who has ever had any experience working with an animal shelter knows, there's no such thing as "too much funding." In the perfect world, all animal havens would have unlimited funds so that homeless pets could live in the lap of luxury while they await their forever homes. Of course, it goes without saying that this is a less than perfect world. Funding sometimes runs short, and then it's up to creative, compassionate people to lend a hand by using the skills they have to generate a few extra
dollars.
A group of volunteers in Atlanta wins my vote for "Best Use of Local Talent." Artists to the Rescue is a group of artists who work together organizing fundraising events to help out their local no-kill animal shelters. Their events have included art sales, raffles and even bingo nights. From arts and crafts to on-site pet portraits to music and raffle items, the events center around any and all kinds of art.
Perhaps the best part of these events, at least from the animal's point of view, is that the animals from the selected shelter also attend the event in hopes of finding permanent homes. You might attend an event in hopes of finding that perfect picture for over the fireplace,
but end up with a four-legged beasty who will provide you with many more hours of love and entertainment than a whole room full of colorful canvases ever could.
Kudos to the Artists to the Rescue group. They're an excellent example of what can be accomplished when a group of folks capitalize on their strengths.
