Myth: All dogs are able to swim. Some just don't realize it.

Fact: All dogs cannot swim and some hate water. They bark at it and avoid it altogether. If you're playing ball with the water-hating dog and the orb accidentally goes into a nearby pond, it's as good as gone.

Avid fishermen with water-loathing pooches, your weekends might just be in for a change. You can sign up your dog for swimming lessons! The Dog Run is the only pool specifically designed for dogs in New York City, providing "an alternative way to interact with your dog."

The pool at the Dog Run is 4 ½ feet deep, heated to a comfortable 87 degrees and is chlorinated to a safe level for your dog. And you can even join your dog for a swim in one of the wet suits that the facility provides. Professional therapists offer lessons for $10 to all their doggie daycare clients. Membership packs are available and you can call or visit the facility for a schedule of daycare sessions and swimming lessons.

In addition to swimming lessons, the Dog Run offers massage therapy and hydrotherapy for aging, injured or overweight dogs. Swim therapists are trained in different forms of therapeutic touch and carefully monitor your dog's heart rate and breathing during its swim time. Appointments are typically 30 minutes long and are private or semi-private (meaning there may be another dog in the pool at the same time). Several therapy packages are available and therapists will even come to your home for at-home therapy and lessons in your own pool.

The Dog Run is located at 136 Ninth Avenue in New York City. You can call for hours of operation and to find out about swimming lessons, daycare and therapy for your dog at 212-414-2500 or visit their website at www.thedogrun-nyc.com.
