Question: Hello I have a question that I don't know the answer to. I have a puppy. My friends keep telling me it has worms. Where did it get them and how do I get rid of them? The dog rubs his rear on the carpet a lot and leaves marks, which I don't like much. Help me please!
Answer: Dear Mary,
First of all, congratulations on the new puppy! Getting a new furry friend is always a good reason to celebrate! Now...for the reasons your pup could be scooting...yes, it could be that your pup has worms. Puppies get worms in one of two main ways:
- from their mother while nursing or
- by walking through worm egg-infected feces and then licking at their feet.
There's no reason to freak out though...almost all puppies have intestinal worms of some kind or the other, and there's really a simple way to get rid of them: dewormer. You can buy it at a local pet store, such as Petcoâ or PetSmartâ, or you can see your veterinarian for a prescription dewormer. Another reason a dog could be scooting could be a problem with its anal glands. These are two small glands located at the 3 and 9 positions just inside a dog's rectum. The glands produce a foul smelling liquid that is released when the dog defecates. Sometimes these glands will get impacted with material and can become quite irritating, so the dog will scoot in an effort to relieve the irritation. Either way, I'd take your new pup for it's first visit to the vet...it'll get a good check-up and they can absolutely answer any questions you might have!
Good luck!
Your pal,
Lapdog
