Travel with Southern Charm

If you've ever traveled in the southeastern part of the U.S., you know that in most cities in the Deep South, the charming, antebellum, plantation style home is the norm rather than the exception. I, for one love that about the South. I also love that good old-fashioned southern hospitality that I've encountered on every trip I've ever taken south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Recently my husband and I purchased property on an island off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. We'd been talking about eventually retiring to the South some day and wanted to procure property while the land is still there for the taking. We have traveled all over the South and we chose this particular island because of its beautiful beaches, mild climate and proximity to Savannah. I love Savannah. It's a classic, charming, southern city with beautiful architecture, outstanding cuisine and the loveliest people I've ever met.

For dog lovers, there's another reason to love Savannah. That southern hospitality isn't just extended to other people. Georgians welcome dogs with open arms too. And whether you're staying in the heart of the city or on one of the many coastal, Low Country islands, there are a variety of different kinds of lodging options.

Where to Stay:

  • Joan's on Jones Historic Victorian B&B: Joan's on Jones is situated within walking distance to many outdoor cafes and beautiful gardens for which Savannah is known. There is a lovely walled garden right on the property if you and your pooch prefer to stay put. The one-time pet fee of $50 is good forever, no matter how many times you and Fido return.
  • Staybridge Suites: If you prefer to stay where the people are, this hotel offers apartment-like suites with fully equipped kitchens, cable TV and free wi-fi. It's located across the street from the entrance to the famous River Street area and a short walk to the City Market shops and restaurants. You and your dog will enjoy the people watching opportunities available in the neighborhood.
  • Beachview House: Perhaps you are like me and prefer coastal living with city convenience. Then St. Simon's Island is the place to go. Located about 85 miles south of Savannah, St. Simon's Island is home to the pet-friendly Beachview House, a three bedroom, four bath private house with a balcony view of the Atlantic Ocean. Pets are permitted on the beach during certain times of the day and the house is in walking distance to the pier and shopping district.

Where to Eat:

  • B. Matthews Eatery on Bay Street is a casual bistro and Savannah's oldest tavern. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, B. Matthews is completely dog friendly serving doggie biscuits and ice cold water; perfect refreshments after touring historic downtown on foot. The human food is superb too.
  • Belford's Savannah is located near the City Market and offers an outdoor covered dining area with ceiling fans. They serve the best crab cakes in town and the people watching can't be beat.
  • The Crab Shack on Tybee Island, about 20 minutes from Savannah, started out as a small mom & pop joint for the local fishermen to come and relax and have a beer after a long day on the boat. Today, the restaurant still maintains the comfortable atmosphere the locals have known and loved but welcomes large groups of up to 80 people and is a hot spot for tourists. Visitors warn about the cats though. Tybee Island is a cat haven and they are fearless of everyone...including dogs. They like the Crab Shack for its fresh seafood of course - and so will you.

What to do:

  • Take a walk - Savannah is a walking city, famous for its beautiful gardens and historic River Street. You and your dog will love walking the cobblestone streets under a canopy of old oak trees in the historic downtown area, taking in all the smells, from the fragrant gardens to the yummy sidewalk cafes. At night, you can enjoy a great ghost tour through the pet-friendly cemeteries.
  • Comb the beach - If you've eaten at the Crab Shack, you'll have to drive a little to enjoy an after dinner stroll on the beach because Tybee Island doesn't allow dogs on the beach - ever. But Saint Simon's Island does so if you've opted for easy beach living, you can always grab an early dinner on Tybee and then drive back to Saint Simon's for a leisurely stroll or a peak at the sunset over the creek.
  • Join the parade. St. Patrick's Day is always a big event in Savannah and the celebration begins with a huge parade through historic downtown. This year's parade will be held on Friday, March 14th and is 100% dog-friendly.
  • If shopping is your ‘bag,' stop by Oseaa Upstairs in Savannah. They specialize in vintage clothing and jewelry and will provide water and treats for your dog while you shop.

Whether it's a quiet weekend away, a family get-away or a site-seeing adventure, Savannah has what you're looking for. So pack your bags, grab Fido's leash and enjoy your stay in Georgia's first city.
