Hello again, dear readers! Well, April showers might bring May flowers but they also make you get soaking wet! I've never been a fan of rain and I'm guessing that your canine pal would agree with me there. Nobody has fun being dragged outside in the rain. And nobody likes a wet dog, especially the wet dog in question. But a pooch still needs her exercise and stimulation, so what's a human to do with her shut-in hound? Luckily, I have devised many fun activities that you can do right in the comfort (and dryness) or your own home!

  • Watch the inside of your eyelids: Otherwise known as "napping." This is a great way to while away a rainy afternoon and contrary to popular belief it can be a team sport. I actually prefer a snuggle-buddy and I'll bet you do too. Grab an old comforter and a few pillows and spread them out on the living room floor. Snuggle up, listen to the sound of the rain and drift off. Music is a nice option as well. The level of sleep is up to you (deep, dozing, REM, etc.), but rest is the best!
  • Taunt the Kitty: Never mind. My mom says that she wouldn't allow this activity in the house. But I'll bet it's fun!
  • Find the Snack: Here's something fun to do. Hide a treat for us somewhere in the house and help us to sniff it out. I think this is called "Hot or Cold" for humans, so you can use the same rules if you'd like. And this activity is best played multiple times so make sure you have lots of snacks to conceal!
  • I Spy: Look out the window with your pup and play a nice game of "I spy with my little eye..." We will willingly participate but you'll have to learn to speak Canine because otherwise you'll just accuse us of barking at stuff outside.
  • Read aloud: Reading is fundamental (or so I hear from TeeVee) so why not grab a good book and read to us? Lots of people are Book Worms (even though they look human and not at all like an invertebrae), but how many work on their speaking voice and actually read aloud? Just to let you know, dogs listen best with their eyes closed. While snoring.
  • Fetch: It may seem cliché, but dogs really do enjoy a rousing game of fetch. But since this is supposed to be stuff we can do together, and because we aren't a greedy species, we will let you have your turn to fetch. We can fetch you stuffed toys or balls and you can fetch us some bone-bones. Or kibble. You decide.
  • Raiders of the Lost Fridge: We once watched a movie where some humans looked for an arc (whatever that is...I thought it was "Raiders of the Lost Bark," which was why I wanted to watch it in the first place) but I think a fridge is much more fun to raid. We will very gladly help you clean out the stuff in your refrigerator that you (erroneously) find questionable. If it helps, you can wear a funny hat, safari clothes and wield a jump rope as a whip.
  • Phodography: We are the perfect subjects for you photography enthusiasts. No shot is wasted on us: Pooch in Repose, Hound on the Hunt, Classic Canine. There are so many options! We'll work it and all we ask for compensation is some grub.
  • Knitting: We'll probably need a new sweater next season, so learning to knit one for us would be a keen activity. Just to let you know, dogs knit best with their eyes closed. While snoring.
  • Bone-Bone Bakery: There are lots of yummy recipes for baking your own dog treats and since it's raining outside, let's use Oven! I generally approve of anything that Oven spits out anyhow. We will willingly be your Official Tasters. This activity is both fun and frugal. You save money on store-bought goodies, get all-natural and healthy snacks, and boy will we be pleased!
  • Taunt the...oh forget it. It'll never happen.

No matter what you do, just being together is the best part of all. And soon the clouds will clear and it'll be back to fun in the sun. Huzzah for homebound hobbies!
