Diane Stein's book, Natural Healing for Dogs and Cats presents an interesting
look at alternative care and medicine for pets. She places a very strong
emphasis on the link between health and proper nutrition, something that many
pet owners overlook. However, the author also explores other "holistic"
treatments.
I find the idea of using massage, acupressure, acupuncture, etc. intriguing.
However, would never rely on such remedies as "treatment" for an ailing animal
without the supervision and guidance of a veterinarian.
Some of the other alternative approaches she mentions include using flower
essences, other herbal concoctions and even "psychic healing" techniques.
Personally, I have experience trying flower essences and herbal remedies and did
not have a lot of success with them. The psychic healing section had some
interesting and useful information about anatomy, body language, and facial
expressions of dogs and cats. But perhaps I am not open minded enough to have
truly grasped the part about auras and psychic energy.
Overall, the book was entertaining and interesting. In addition to the useful
information about nutrition, body language and anatomy, there is a section on
pet death that I think is touching, beautiful and comforting.
As a word of caution, if readers of this book are inclined to try some of these
techniques and remedies to "treat" any conditions that their dogs or cats suffer
from, I strongly suggest they consult a veterinarian first. A regular
veterinarian will be able to tell you whether you might be doing more harm than
good. And a holistic veterinarian may be able to tell you which of these
alternative therapies is best suited for your pet and how to properly apply it.
The book can be purchased at Amazon.com for under $14.00.
