The state motto is “Live Free or Die.” Everyone I’ve ever met from New Hampshire takes their state motto to heart. They also love their dogs. Right about now you’re probably planning a fall getaway to check out the colorful leaves, or a winter ski trip in the New England mountains. If you’d like to bring along your dog, here are a few places in New Hampshire to consider:

A Seaside Retreat
If relaxing at the beach is your idea of a great vacation, dogs are permitted on the beaches in Seabrook (the main coastal town) from September 15 through June 1. The pet-friendly Residence Inn in nearby Portsmouth offers separate living and sleeping areas and a fully equipped kitchen. Dogs should be on leashes and accompanied by their owners at all times in the hotel and on the beaches. The Breaking Grounds café offers gourmet coffee and tea and dogs are welcome on the outdoor patio; a great place for people watching after a stroll on the beach.

The Scenic Route
If you prefer more sightseeing and less lounging, Conway New Hampshire is home to the Conway Scenic Railroad. There are several excursions to choose from and dogs are permitted in the coach cars on all of them. Imagine riding through the scenic mountains during peak season of the autumn leaves in an old-fashioned steam engine. A round trip will bring you back to North Conway where you can stay in one of log cabins at the Foothills Farm Bed & Breakfast in the White Mountains. This remote area on the Maine/New Hampshire border offers hiking, skiing, snow-shoeing, picnicking and star-gazing.

Wilderness Adventure
If you and your dog are lovers of the great outdoors and you are looking for a great adventure, travel north to within just a few miles of the Canadian border where you’ll find Dear Mountain Campground. Located adjacent to the Connecticut River, this campground offers 22 camp sites with picnic tables, fireplaces and flat areas for pitching your tent. Deer Mountain is adjacent to a three-mile stretch of road near Pittsburg that the locals refer to as Moose Alley. That’s because it’s not uncommon to see moose and other large game meandering through the wilderness. As with many of New Hampshire’s state parks, dogs are permitted in Deer Mountain Campground on a leash and attended by their owners at all times.

Whether you prefer strolling at the beach, skiing down the mountains or hiking the nature trails, New Hampshire has something for everyone in any season…even the family dog.
