Trick or Biscuit!

October is here and soon it will be Halloween. Tradition dictates that most children are planning their costumes. But later trends dictate that many pet-owners are planning their dogs' costumes! Many cities, towns, shelters and pet stores hole parades and contests so that pet-owners can get in on the fun of Halloween dress up. So I have decided to talk about some of the best and worst pet costumes that I have seen over the years, and to share a few of my own ideas. By the way, if any of you readers own dog costumes, I would love to see pictures!
Worst dressed:
- A dachshund in a bun was cute the first dozen times but now I am so over it. You know that old expression "it was funny the first time?" Well, you understand what I am saying.
- "Opposite costumes," like dressing your Chihuahua as a dragon or your Mastiff as a ballerina. Not particularly dignified if you ask me. A good example of just such a travesty: two years ago my sister handmade the most adorable cow costume for her Parson Russell Terrier. She put a lot of work into it and the effect was priceless. So she and her "cow" showed up to the costume contest and ended up losing to a pit bull in a store bought princess cap and ruff! I would like to know who thought that the great irony of a pit bull princess trumped a handmade Parson Russell cow. Can you say re-count?
Best dressed:
- Shrek - one of the many costumes that make dogs look like two-legged creatures. However, this costume is really best suited for a muscular, blunt-faced dog - scruffy faces lose something in the translation.
- Chewbacca - If you can find such a costume, it's perfect for the scruffy faced dogs.
These costume ideas got me thinking. I'd like to see a new trend this year - costumes that suit the dogs. Here are my ideas.
- Boston Terrier - Dress it as a bat.
- Greyhound - Dress it as a horse (be sure to include a saddle).
- Mastiff - How about the Incredible Hulk?
- Bloodhound - There can be nothing more obvious than Sherlock Holmes.
- Dalmatian - Fireman uniform of course!
- German Shepard - What else but a police officer.
Whatever costume you decide, it's never a bad thing to have fun with your dog! Just remember, biscuits are okay. Chocolate isn't!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
