In honor of Mother’s Day - I wanted to share Tink’s story.

Tink, a dachshund lives with her family on a breeding farm in West Virginia. This past February, Tink gave birth to a litter of two puppies but sadly, one of them was still born. A few days later, one of the other doxies, Sammi had her first litter of seven pups! Worried that so many little mouths to feed would overwhelm this new mother, her owners took two of the pups and placed them with Tink to foster. Tink was happily taking care of her little family when the unexpected happened -- Tink was given another baby to care for and his name was Pink. This new addition wasn’t like the other pups; Pink was the runt of a 12-piglet litter.

Tiny, weak and unable to open his eyes, Pink was taken from his mother as soon as he was able to nurse. Delighted to have more babies to care for, Tink immediately began loving and licking the tiny pig. After only a few hours, his eyes were open and the young pig was nursing alongside his newly adopted siblings.

Adapting well to life in the house, Pink fit right in with his new family - nursing, playing and snuggling with the other pups. However, Tink thought he still needed extra care and was very protective of her piglet.

As the pups grew older and were weaned, Pink rebelled. Shunning pig pellets, he settled into a diet of formula and puppy food. At their six-week check up, the puppies weighed 2-3 pounds. each. Pink weighed 2 ½ pounds and the rest of the piglets weighed a whopping 20 pounds!

A small pig with a big personality, Pink loves to roam around the house exploring every nook and cranny. His siblings treat him just like another puppy, chasing and ganging up on him. He loves the games and Tink is always there to make sure things don’t get too out of hand. While Pink loves being cuddled by mom and siblings, he isn’t much for snuggling with his owners.

For a short time, Pink and Tink’s family considered allowing him to be adopted by a loving family, but ultimately decided not to separate Tink and her son. Pink, who now weighs more than seven pounds, has his own stall in the barn and loves to root around in the shavings. Since he’s really a dog at heart, Pink’s stall features a snuggly dog bed to sleep in. He spends his days playing with his sister, his mom Tink and the other dogs on the farm.

Tink’s willingness to take in a small pink pig shows how a mother’s love is truly unconditional. This extraordinary dachshund is a role model for her family, for other dachshunds and for mother’s everywhere.

Happy Mother’s Day!
